The fall 2022 anime season is filled with lots of action-packed Shōnen—if you’re new here, that just means anime marketed at (but not limited to) the young male audience (12–18-year-olds), or what I like to call the guilty pleasure of seinen activists like me, or anyone above the age of 19, also like me.
Some of them are new to the small screens like Chainsaw Man, and some are household names like Bleach, pun intended.
Whether you’re a budding Otaku or an OG, but with limited time to chow through the buffet of wonderful series released this fall.
This article will help break down the noise and help plan your viewing schedule.
As any person of culture would know, there are four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall, which, for the most part, direct the release of anime in Japan.
They usually last about 13 weeks, and television networks typically broadcast episodes weekly; hence, anime typically has 12–13 episodes per season.
However, as noted by Otakubox, a season can mean the number of episodes between the first one aired and the season finale of any series, hence some series have as many as 39 episodes.
Consequently, series like the popular espionage action-comedy, Spy × Family have had the second sequence of episodes described as cour 2.
As you can see, for the young’uns this can be particularly confusing, just like watching Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure without context or the time I peeked into my friend Emeka’s laptop and saw him watching Interspecies Reviewers, losing whatever that was left of my Otaku innocence in a beguiling way.
But daijoubu desu, your favourite internet senpai, is here to sort it all out and prevent any unnecessary PTSD. First off, if your friends let you watch JBA as your very first anime, you need to start making better life choices. Secondly, how about I become a little more succinct like Inumaki Toge from Jujutsu Kaisen and get, right into it?
Right!

Let’s dive into the details
Spy × Family
Everyone’s favourite family is back on TV, and no, it’s not The Johnsons or the Kardashians, with a telepathic daughter for an only child, which I’m sure everyone wished they had when they were younger.

In the first episode of this second half of the first season, we see the assassin mom and spy dad continue their act of being a normal family, purchasing a dog like in the Manga, and Loid carrying out covert missions as usual.
In addition to their new canine Bond, (Just) Bond, we’ll see Agent Fiona Frost. Staying true to the manga, she’ll serve as Loid’s protege as they make advances to complete their mission: gather intelligence on Donovan Desmond.
This season premiered on October 1st, 2022.
My Hero Academia (Boku no Hīrō Akademia) S6
This season, produced by Bones, delves into the Manga’s Paranormal Liberation War arc, which can be found in the chapters of the 27th volume.
It follows the students of the U.A. Academy as they battle the Paranormal Liberation Front led by Tomura Shigaraki. The outcome of this battle is threatening to the entire superhero society.
We root for our heroes, including the fans’ beloved, blessed with the powers of “One for All” as they gather intelligence to go against the combined forces of the narcissist-led supervillain squad.
It airs on the same day as Chainsaw Man, October the 1st, on Crunchyroll.
Golden Kamuy
As announced on the 5th of December last year, our meso-loving duo make their way to the screen.
This time, just returning from Russia, they make their way back to Hokkaido, with Asirpa recovering her memories, the key to the highly sought-after gold!

Unlike Ogata, we’ll be saying goodbye to Geno Studio as Brain’s Base is set to take up the animation of this new season.
It promises new adventures, and you can best expect an action-packed ride with the inclusion of new characters, one of which I’m particularly excited about being Waichiro Sekiya, as well as snipers, pirates, and wait for it… bear men!
Brace yourselves, folks, because as revealed in the second trailer on the 3rd of October, the Immortal Sujimoto will grace our screens!
Mob Psycho 100 III
I bet you couldn’t wait for this season to see the new ways Shigeo would be exploited by his “mentor” Reigen. Ebuka describes him as Saitama from One-Punch Man but with hair.
Shigeo is a beige-looking kid who, unbeknownst to everyone else, except us, the viewers and a couple of other characters, is actually an OP esper with mind-blowing psychic powers.
In order to control them, he lives a nearly completely emotional inert life. Noble, like the gases he represents, works as an assistant to the con artist Reigen Arataka, and together they battle foes while Shigeo’s powers push their limits.
It feels gooood…to watch, much like Nickelodeon’s Captain Man and Kid Danger!
The season was still released on October 5th, 2022, as reported in this article by HITC, despite Crunchyroll’s last-minute decision to recast the main character’s voice in the English dub.
The decision was due to a failure to meet with Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) union representatives.
Blue Lock
Fueled by high expectations, Blue Lock features something for everyone, from high-stakes action to attractive, athletically built young men.
It tells the story of Ego Jinpachi, a man hired by the Japan Football Union to enhance the ability of the country’s soccer team for the World Cup.

His plan? He hopes to bring about 300 teenage boys to the Blue Lock facility, where he hopes to train soccer Spartans with a vigorous physical program to take back Japan’s place on the world’s soccer stage.
The catch? Only one person will be chosen as Japan’s national striker. The rest, however, will never be allowed to represent the national team, ever!
In the middle of this is Yoichi Isagi, fresh off a devastating loss at a national high school football qualifier, losing due to a pass he made to a teammate instead of making the shot himself.
There is also Hyōma Chigiri, a player with expeditious feet, scared of reaching his full potential due to an injury sustained in a previous match.
Will they get out of their way to secure their spot at the pinnacle of the country’s soccer team? There’s only one way to find out about this Eight Bit Studio animation set to be released on October 9th, 2022.
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War
Highly sought-after even though the manga ended more than 5 years ago in 2016.
The final arc of this anime staple, which is held by some Otakus as part of the “Big 3,” was announced in 2021, to the perked-up ears and beaming eyes of avid fans.
Per Crunchyroll, the story goes that “When new Soul Reapers and a new enemy appear in his hometown of Karakura, Ichigo jumps back into the battlefield with his Zanpakuto to help those in need.”
Meanwhile, the Soul Society is observing a sudden surge in the number of hollows destroyed in the World of the Living. They also received separate reports of residents in the Rukon District having gone missing.
Finally, the Seireitei, home of the Soul Reapers, comes under attack by a group calling themselves the Wandenreich.
The Wandenreich declares war on the Soul Reapers, led by Yhwach, the father of all Quincies, with the following message: “Five days from now, the Soul Society will be annihilated by the Wandenreich.”
The series promises a major revelation in the history of the Soul Reapers and a truth kept hidden for a millennium.
The release date in the US is October 10, with the 11th of October being that for Japan.
It is set to air on Hulu in the US while Disney+ holds the international streaming rights, both of which are causing fans to threaten to pirate the series as reported by this article by the CBR
CHAINSAW MAN
Ever since Chris encouraged me to pick up the manga and I managed to survive the first two chapters unscathed, I knew this would make the cut.
I’m not much of a Manga person, I hate to confess, so when I heard this was getting an anime series, I was more than stoked.

The series, created by MAPPA, tells the story of Denji, a boy on the verge of “God abeg” (destitution) who makes a contract with a devil in the form of a dog-like creature.
The creature grants him the ability to transform his limbs into chainsaws in order to massacre the Yakuza who betrayed him while he worked for them to repay his dead father’s debt.
Really horrific stuff, I know. If you’re a fan of Death Note or Tokyo Ghoul, you’re sure to love it!
Eventually, he gets recruited by the Public Safety Devil Hunters, a governmental agency tasked with preventing and mitigating the threat of devils in the world.
Talk about a conflict of interest: working for the organization that has made it their mission to eradicate his kind.
It is scheduled to be released on October 12, 2022. Now, run along and go mark the date! 📅
To Your Eternity
Taking over from Brain Base for the production of my favourite anime of last year, Studio Drive will be responsible for the animation of the new season of a series that follows Fushi, who has the ability to assume the form of any deceased entity he makes an emotional bond with.
From rocks to his signature White Wolf to his fire-breathing brother by adoption, he also takes hold of their abilities and idiosyncrasies, learning over years running into centuries as he learns what it really means to be human.
As described on Twitter: “In the beginning, an “orb” is cast onto Earth. “It” can do two things: change into the form of the thing that stimulates “it”; and come back to life after death.
“It” morphs from orb to rock, then to wolf, and finally to boy, but roams about like a newborn who knows nothing. As a boy, “it” became Fushi. Through encounters with human kindness, Fushi not only gains survival skills but grows as a “person”.
But his journey is darkened by the inexplicable and destructive enemy Nokker, as well as cruel partings with the people he loves. “
The series is set to be released on the 23rd of October.
P. S: Did you see what I did here with the Nobel gas reference? If you did, it’s either that we’ve got great chemistry or you’re just an observant geek. 🤓 Anyway, I think I’ll go with the first. Thank you very much.
Do you think this list is all-inclusive? I suspect we forgot to mention your favourite. I dare you to a duel in the comment section!
